The McCanns consider the attitude and actions of Gonçalo Amaral in sacking his lawyer as a further delaying tactic.
The trial has been postponed for 10 days and today’s hearing cancelled.
Speaking to journalists, the McCanns said that this is the fourth time that the trial has been postponed, adding that these deliberate delays complicate their lives as they have to travel to Portugal each time and make arrangements for their twins to be looked after in their absence.
The parents of missing girl Madeleine McCann are claiming compensation of €1.2 million from the former police inspector for defamation in his book about the case which suggests that the McCanns had something to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.
Amaral went to the Civil Court in Lisbon to announce that he had sacked his lawyer, resulting in a delay to the restart of the trial.
The McCann’s lawyer, Isabel Duarte, said there should be a way that the trial can proceed as the parents of the British child had travelled from England for today’s hearing.

But in the 1950's and 1960's Portugal was ideal for such wide spread 'tests'. An ill educated backward society, already tightly controlled for decades by thousands of very nasty secret police with their equally secret 'snouts' numbering many thousands more. The elite happy to take bribes to 'facilitate' experiments and due to severe restrictions on internal movement – most Portuguese born, living and dying within a few kilometres – very little chance for any individual to comment authoritatively and stir protest.
Does it also explain why the Portuguese are now by far the most neurotic in Europe ? The suspicion and dislike of foreigners, the paranoia about their insignificance as a country. Depression. The hopelessness of their lives. The anger about the McCanns and similar folk ?
So the Portuguese are a sub-species because they've been genetically modified.

sadly Dierdre probably not although perhaps a curious link to GM, unknown to the McCann haters. This odd behaviour is almost certainly the result of Salazar Crop Trials in the 1950's and 1960's.
Hansard has referred to these a number of times for various reasons - under Parliamentary Priviledge.
Apparently Salazar was a great enthusiast for 'new science' to go with the 'New Estate' .... and followed agro-chemical developments closely.
These included introducing DDT and such like along with Vietnam War defoliants. As so many farmers were illiterate or ignorant of what they had been given to 'try out' - and being a police state did not ask questions ... much got into the drinking water system.
The result can be seen everywhere in humans from that era in this country .....
Which is unquestionably why the British Government is so tactful in this and similar matters.
