ReFood - reutilising the food we would throw away

ReFood - reutilising the food we would throw awayIs it possible that we throw away 1/3 of all the food we produce? When a ReFood Volunteer came to Rotary Club Estoi Palace International and explained that it is possible, everyone there was very surprised.

What is Refood? In 2010 an American ex pat living in Lisbon, Hunter Halder, realised that he could help to stop these shocking amounts of food being thrown away and reutilise them.

On Wednesday 9th March 2011 Refood went into action with one volunteer on a bicycle visiting 30 restaurants, and collecting enough food to feed 50 people in need for 5 days a week. Today there are 31 ReFood centres operating throughout the country where more than 4,500 volunteers are currently rescuing 46,000 meals a month from more than 900 food source partners, and serving 2,500 people 5 to 6 days a week.

Faro is the next Centre to come on line and the official opening will be on the 14th of May. RC Estoi Palace International members were so impressed with this fantastic effort that they decided to help with some fund raising to buy much needed items.

RC Estoi Palace International together with the Rotary Club of Olhao and Alliance Francaise in the Algarve will be hosting a White Night Dinner at the Catering College in Faro on 28th May at 7.30 pm, admission 20 euros. CLICK HERE to see more details.

There will be a public presentation on 13th May by Hunter Halder at the Escola Superior de Saude in Faro at 7.00 pm, followed by the official opening on the 14th of May.
