Silves students walk the red carpet

Silves students walk the red carpetStudents of Silves Sul school walked the red carpet the night of 14 March at the Cultural Centre in Pera. The second annual Oscar Night awarded students for their efforts in the visual arts: drawing, photography, and nine categories of film making.

Nine of the teams from the 29 nominated films came on stage to accept their oscars and give thank-you speeches, dazzled and smiling. A total of over 40 films were entered, along with many pieces of artwork and photographs.

A project started by Alan Winn of the Silves Rotary Club, students from primary to year ten worked toward this night both as school assignments and to express themselves. Agrupamento Escolas de Silves Sul and the Wildern School in Southampton work in partnership for this event modelled on a similar ceremony at Wildern.

The excellent results were applauded by 600 friends, family, school officials, Algarve Rotarians, representatives of the Wildern School, the Mayor of Silves, the Director of Education for the Algarve, the British Vice Consul, and the Deputy British Ambassador to Portugal.

Dr. Carlos Silva, Director of Escolas de Silves Sul, has been an enthusiastic supporter of the project from its beginning. Alan and Pamela Winn have donated software and a green screen to facilitate film production, and hold charitable events in order to support a yearly exchange at Oscar times between student filmmakers here and at Wildern. Projection Dreams gave monetary support for this event.
