Portugal’s controversial 2020 National Road Safety Strategy program (PENSE2020) has dropped studying mandatory helmet laws for cyclists, after strong public opposition. Shortly after being launched for public consultation, in the midst of the Christmas holiday season, over 600 cyclists marched throughout Lisbon urging for the helmet proposal to be dropped.
The Road Authority stated that there were over 500 written contributions from citizens and bicycle mobility associations, many of which demanding for helmet laws not to go ahead. Both FPCUB and MUBi sent public letters regarding the mistakes in the Road Strategy’s proposal, with a particular focus on the negative effects of mandatory bicycle helmets.
The Portugal Open Golf has returned to the Algarve with the event this year being held at Morgado Golf Club from the 11th to 14th May. We are in need of volunteer marshals for this event.

Padraig Harrington won on the European tour at Vilamoura this weekend, raising him from 159th to 97th in the rankings as he held off the challenge of defending champion Andy Sullivan at the Portugal Masters showing calm under pressure with a closing 65 to finish 23 under par.
Sullivan won the event by nine shots last season and this year looked good with birdies on four out of his first five holes giving him 22 under par at the end of the weekend.
