Quinta do Lago has unveiled plans for a major renovation of its North Course to match the other first-class golfing facilities at the prestigious resort in Portugal’s Algarve.
Work will begin this month (Nov) and the course is scheduled to re-open in October 2014, with the new plans designed by renowned American golf architect Beau Welling in collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.
Our American-style Football team in the Algarve, The Algarve Pirates, has resumed practices every Tuesday and Thursday evening as well as Saturday mornings in Mexilhoeira Grande, just west of Portimão. They are preparing for their second season in the Portuguese League.
Open to ages 16 and up (most players range in age from 20 – 40 yrs of age) anyone who thinks they would like to experience the sport is encouraged to come out.
Manager of Blackpool FC, Paul Ince, brought his squad to the Algarve for pre-season training between 23rd and 30th June, and chose the Amendoeira Golf Resort as the venue.
Ince was preparing his side for their first game of the new season, which is against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday 3rd August, and he was delighted with the facilities on offer at the on-site Amendoeira Sports Club.
The Algarve Pirates American Football team will play their last home game of the regular season on Sunday 24th March at Mexilhoeira Grande, at 3 pm, and will dedicate the game to the memory of their Head Coach, Llew Gittens, who sadly passed away on 12th March after losing his battle with cancer.
Coach Llew, as he was known to all associated with the team, was not only instrumental in establishing the Pirates as a football team but also inspired the players, who had never before been exposed to the disciplines and rigours of the American game. Whilst his person will be missed by the team, his passion for the game is carried on by all who are involved with the Algarve Pirates.
The Algarve’s only American Football team, the Algarve Pirates, travelled to Lisbon last weekend to play the current league champion ‘Lisbon Navigators’ in the 4th match of the season, at the University Sports ground.
With the Pirate’s recent victory against the St Iria Wolves still fresh in the memory confidence was high, if expectations remained realistic.
AGF Aarhus football club from Denmark currently plays in the top tier of the Danish football league system, the Danish Superliga, and finished 5th in the 2011-12 season. The squad travelled to Portugal to compete in the Altantic Trophy 2013 against IF Elfsborg, FC Mitdjlland, Helsingborg IF, SC Farense & Aalborg. Manager Peter Sørensen brought the team to the Amendoeira Golf Resort from 9th to 20th February where they stayed and combined intensive training session on the full sized, natural grass pitch at the resort's Amendoeira Sports Club with the Altantic Trophy fixtures.
A crowd of around 150 spectators saw The Algarve Pirates American Football team win their first game on Saturday in the brilliant sunshine at Mexilhoeira Grande. In an exciting and hard fought contest with the Sta. Iria de Azoia Wolves the Pirates were victorious by 33 points to 15, an astonishing achievement for a team in only its third game as a league team.
Not only did they win convincingly, but the Pirates now have a real opportunity at being involved in the end of season Playoffs, which would make them the first team in league history to reach the Playoffs in their first season.
