Docapesca has ignored Algarve's poor and crumbling dock facilities

FaroDocksNewMarinaSmallThe poor state of Faro’s harbour is allowing water to seep under nearby roads, pavements and gardens.

Rogério Bacalhau, president of Faro Council, is concerned about the situation and says that the city really can not continue to wait for Docapesca to get around to fixing the problem.

A report in Sul Informação highlighted the situation and referred to slabs of stone missing and broken harbour walls.

The mayor said that major work needed doing now but had no idea when Docapesca would start the extensive repairs necessary.

The mayor said he had asked and they replied that they would do the work as and when there was an investor for the planned, but by no means certain, marina development the far side of the railway line (pictured).

This conveniently would have delayed essential repair work for several years but questions asked by Algarve news service, Sul Informação, have prodded Docapesca into action as the directors said today that the operation will start next year, rather than at some ill-defined point in the far distant future.

This was a guarantee given to the news service and to the council by Docapesca this morning (Thursday) which claims that the work now is scheduled.

Over in Vila Real de Santo António, the Communist MP, Paulo Sá, questioned the Minister for the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, on the dates for commencement and completion of construction work for the new pier for the ferry to and from Spain.

The temporary arrangement for the ferry is unsafe and does not allow for cars to be loaded and unloaded.

"The situation has caused losses to the Guadiana River Transport company, particularly as vehicles can not be transported between Vila Real de Santo António and Ayamonte", said Paulo Sá, who visited the pier today and said jobs are now at risk.

The ferry company’s Spanish partner already has threatened to take the case to court as Ayammonte has its new pier, but VRSA does not.

As a sort of temporary solution, representatives of Docapesca said the company has decided to launch a tender for the construction of a new floating dock and an access bridge to the pier, sometime, one day...when what is needed is what was promised in the first place - a new pier.
