Wet Algarve weekend continues through Monday

sagresThe weather is expected to remain wet and stormy across mainland Portugal until Tuesday with heavy downpours, strong winds, snowfall on high ground in the north and rough seas.

In Friday's warning, the National Civil Protection Authority warned of high seas until the end of Saturday morning on the north and central coast and in the Lisbon region, with four metre waves.

The Algarve was hit on Sunday evening with heavy rains predicted to ease off late on Monday.

Winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour are expected in the mountains and up to 70 kilometers per hour along the west coast.

On ground above 1,000 metres in inland and northern areas, snow may fall from the end of Sunday, lasting through Monday.

The National Civil Protection Authority warns of the possibility of flooding, the formation of water and ice sheets on roads at high altitudes, fallen trees, damage to structures such as scaffolding, and accidents. The Algarve will be less windy than other areas but with heavy rains and high seas.

Minimum temperatures are also likely to plunge between 4ºC and 6ºC while snow is expected to fall in the Serra da Estrela.

It will not be cold though, with maximum temperatures of 20ºC and 18ºC expected for the Algarve over the wet weekend.
