Councillor voting suspension leads to Loulé budget impasse

LouleCamaraBuildingThe president of Loulé council’s Municipal Assembly decided on Friday November 25th, to suspend the €104 million 2017 budget meeting, due a PSD complaint that certain Socialist Party councillors should not be able to vote as they run municipal companies or have contracts with the council.

The assembly chief, Adriano Pimpão, said "They are members of the socialist party who are councillors and have leading positions in municipal enterprises."

This topic is not new but as nothing has been done about it since it first was discussed in 2013, the assembly president decided to postpone the budget meeting until the situation has been clarified and resolved.

The Social Democrat councillor, Irina Martins said "There are five deputies from the Socialist Party that may have a conflict of interests, as three have leading positions in municipal companies and two to give their services to the Council under contract."

Martins added that, "this case has nothing to do with individuals, but it’s a question of ethics and the way politics is carried out."

The Loulé Municipal Assembly is composed of 18 members from the Socialist Party, 16 from the Social Democratic Party, one from the Left Bloc and one from the CDU.
