Macário Correia, the controversial ex-mayor of Tavira and then of Faro councils, whose legal struggles defined much of his public service career, has been appointed chief executive of the waste processing company Algar.
This public body is 44% owned by the 16 Algarve councils, many of whose mayors will be well known to Correia which may be a comfort as he settles into his new role.
Correia will take over the reigns at Algar before the end of next week with his appointment being ratified at the next General Meeting of the company in April.
It is not known who Correia beat at interview to get this plum CEO post, albeit in the fragrant world of waste disposal, but a job’s a job in this economic environment.
As this is a public appointment Correia may not be able to draw pensions from Tavira and Faro councils while he is in post, a problem that has not overly troubled him in the past.
Correia is replacing José Manuel Perdigao at Algar. Perdiago moves to Águas do Algarve, now run by another former mayor, the equally controversial Isabel Soares formerly of Silves council, renowned for having left piles of fiscal waste matter for the new mayor Rosa Palma to clear up.
Perdiago of course worked at Águas do Algarve before being appointed to run Algar and it seems highly convenient for Correia that Águas do Algarve is able to take Perdiago back during these tough times in the job market.
It is not known what job title Perdiago will have at Águas do Algarve but Isabel Soares is bound to find a role for him in her new empire, conveniently making way for her ex-colleague Correia.
The remaining 56% of Algar is owned by EGF, Empresa Geral do Fomento SA which, is a subsidiary of none other than the Águas de Portugal Group.*
Algar is 'responsible for ensuring the treatment and recovery of waste in an environmentally sound and economically sustainable manner and contributing to improving the quality of life and the environment.'
