Massive Eurosport coverage for Volta ao Algarve cycling race

cyclingDelminoPereiraThe Volta ao Algarve cycling tour is to be broadcast throughout Europe and beyond, with 55 countries and 65 million households able to watch the race and to enjoy views of the Algarve.

The 43rd tour takes place between 15th and 19th of February and will be covered by Eurosport.

In Portugal the tour also can be watched on TVI24,

The Eurosport coverage is scheduled for an hour on each race day with the added bonus of showing off the Algarve as a cycling destination as well as a beautiful one.

The organisers of the event, the Portuguese Cycling Federation, announced that the broadcasts "are only possible due to the investment by the Algarve Region Tourist Board and the Algarve Tourism Association, (ATA) in partnership with Turismo de Portugal, "which sees the Volta ao Algarve as an extraordinary means of promoting the region."

Desidério Silva from the Algarve tourist board commented, "The transmission of the Volta ao Algarve gets the region known as a tourist destination of excellence for cyclists among many other different aspects. We are a region with excellent natural and scenic conditions, with cycling routes and with great hotels, culture, heritage and gastronomy."

The ATA president, Carlos Luís, added, "The ATA, responsible for the international promotion of the Algarve, welcomes the exposure of the region by Eurosport throughout Europe, as it allows us to reach our main markets for tourists. Showing the destination at this time of year, the Volta ao Algarve coverage is an excellent promotional opportunity for the Algarve."

The president of the Portuguese Cycling Federation, Delmino Pereira, (pictured) noted the high degree of cooperation existing between the various bodies involved, from the tourist boards, to the local councils and the sponsors.

The 43rd edition of the tour has attracted 200 competitors in 25 teams with some of the biggest stars in cycling taking part in the five stage race over 722 kilometres.

At last, I can find a subject on which I agree with Desidério. This cooperation between the cyclists and the tourist board promises nothing but good.
