Former Vale de Lobo boss forced to resign from Post Office board

ruiHortaCostaRui Horta and Costa, a defendant in the José Sócrates corruption investigation, has been forced to resign his directorship of Portugal’s Post Office.

Suspected of the corruption, abuse of trust, fraud and money laundering, Rui Horta e Costa decided ‘for personal reasons’ to resign on Wednesday as a non-executive director of CTT where his term was from 2017 to 2019.

The Attorney General’s office stated that Rui Horta e Costa is subject to coercive measure of identity and residence.

CTT announced the decision and sent a statement to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM).

In the statement, the company explains that the resignation was made "for personal reasons due to the disclosure made on Tuesday and the recommendations of the Corporate Governance, Evaluation and Appointments Committee of the Board of Directors of CTT."

Rui Horta and Costa, the former administrator of the Vale do Lobo resort in the Algarve, is suspected with Diogo Gaspar Ferreira to have paid €2 million in cash to Armando Vara and Carlos Santos Silva.

The corruption inquiry, Operation Marquês, also has as defendants the former Prime Minister José Sócrates, Grupo Espírito Santo doyenne Ricardo Salgado, Armando Vara and Sócrates  childhood friend, the businessman Carlos Santos Silva, among others.

Quoting anna:
It wasn't Mr Sander van Gelder who bought the plot as he was the old owner of Vale do Lobo so that wouldnt make any sense.. It was another Dutch citizen.

I still wonder about this, Anna, as the mainstream Portuguese press all have reported the sale was 'to Sander van Gelder.' If I fiond out any different I certainly will change the text and add an apology.

Whilst it is nice to see high heads rolling, doubtless their 'friends in high places' will assure them of plum jobs in the not too distant future when they think no one is looking. À la Macario for instance.
