Algarve records its 16th road crash victim so far this year

INEM125A motorcyclist died on the Algarve's EN125 yesterday afternoon when his bike hit a car.

Bruno Gonçalves, 35, from Fuseta, died instantly after the collision in the Quatrim area of Olhão.

This was the 16th fatality on the region's roads since the beginning of the year, six more than in the same period in 2016.

The accident occurred at 13:00hrs in the middle of the EN125 in the Cavacos area of Quatrim, in the Olhão area. Gonçalves was on his way back to Fuseta when he seems to have hit a car that was going in the same direction.

An INEM team was soon in attendance but it was clear that the motorcyclist had died on impact. INEM psychologists also were at the scene to give support to the man's relatives who had been told of the accident and had rushed to the scene.

The driver of the car, 67, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Faro Hospital. The GNR also was at the scene as were members of the the Road Accident Crime Investigation team.

Bruno Gonçalves’ death is the 16th fatality on the Algarve’s roads this year compared with ten deaths over the same period of 2016.

There have been 76 people seriously injured on the region’s roads so far this year, compared to 59 in the same period of 2016.

Those who enforce tolls on the A22 have a lot to answer for.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before some troll came round and tried to blame the tolls on a motorway miles from the actual crash.

It's difficult to understand how or why someone might use the A22 for the short trip from Cavacos to Fuseta. It is in any case a myth that abolishing tolls would somehow reduce the death toll on the Algarve's roads.

Please go away and peddle your lies elsewhere.

Out of interest JJ in Gibralter, approx how many times have you personally actually driven a vehicle on the roadworks ravaged N125 in say the last 9 months?

I am a frequent user of the eastern part of the 125. West of Faro, not so much. I even cycle on it. Can't wait for all the new roundabouts to be added round Olhão!

It is true that travelling between two small destinations like Cavacos and Fuseta is not worth going all the way onto the motorway, so tolls are not the total solution.

There is only one reason and that is poor driving by majority of drivers. There is seriously something missing between the ears of these drives and are shocked everyday on the driving standards which is absolutely appalling and we put our lives at risk every single day we are on the road. We ourselves nearly got wiped out on EN125 turning left into our road (legal turning) when luckily we took one last look in mirror to the see cars overtaking cars behind us , 3 abreast!! These drivers need to learn to drive and respect others on the road then there maybe fewer fatalities!

The tolls are not to blame for poor driving or the extra traffic now that the holiday season is here.
No one knows the cause of the crash so to blame the tolls is just nonsense.
