Bribery did not work as border GNR seize €430,000 in cash from Chinese national

gnrstopPortugal’s GNR military has seized €430,000 in cash from a Chinese citizen at the border in Caia, Elvas.

The man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering, bring more than €10,000 in cash into the country and attempting to bribe his way out of trouble.

According to a statement from the GNR, the 47-year-old man was detained on Thursday, August 3rd, by GNR personnel of the Elvas Territorial Detachment during a routine surveillance action.

"The GNR approached a vehicle as it entered national territory. Inside the vehicle there was a suitcase containing about €430,000 in bundles of €50 notes."

The money was seized and in the course of the investigation, the suspect "tried to bribe the GNR to be allowed to continue to travel with the money."

Since the beginning of this year, the Portuguese and Spanish authorities have seized more than €1.3 million in cash at this one border crossing from five Chinese nationals.

It looks like the GNR have done another good in apprehending these people who bring money into the country fraudulently. Who knows where this money was destined for.

Surely the routine is to stop all 'slitty eyed' types (as the Duke of Ed. would say if he was still on duty) who had made enquiries about property in Portugal, cross referenced to both a substantial bank withdrawal above x limit and hiring a car in Spain. Showing us tight, professional, management of cross border Iberian policing or more likely - as usually described, pure blind chance?
Also - to minimise irregularities - do these Portuguese border cops carry bodycams ? Is this why the full amount was declared? If it was?
