Dogs to be allowed into restaurants in Portugal - with their owners, obviously

dogLeapingPet dogs soon will be allowed into participating restaurants after parliament approved a proposal, backed by three national parties.

The People-Animals-Nature party, the Left Bloc and The Greens thought it a good idea that pet animals should be allowed inside cafes and restaurants, as well as continuing to allowing guide dogs inside.

The PAN party’s lone MP, André Silva, started a petition to amend the 2015 legislation which prohibits the entry of pets inside catering and drink establishments, even if the proprietor is OK about it.

The PAN initiative wanted to shift the decision making to the owner of the establishment, as to whether pets are allowed, but made it clear that pets are not to be allowed access to 'staff only' areas nor anywhere food preparation areas.

The formal petition to parliament gained all-important Socialist Party votes and the approved law now goes the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for his rejection or signature.

The petition went through despite some MPs voting against their official party line.

Most dogs behave much better than people. All those who don't want to go to a restaurant when dogs are allowed, please let me know when and where you will go, than I will not be there, with or without my dog.

In the Netherlands where I used to live, there is etiquette for entering with your dog; it’s fairly common sense.
Before entering, you ask the server if it’s ok; usually wait while they check with whoever is in charge.
If permission is granted, the dog has to be kept under tight control and sent to lie under the dog owner’s table, where he/she has to be still and quiet for the duration.
If your dog can’t do that, you can’t take him/her inside. Pretty simple.
Sometimes there is more than one dog, and then it’s tough to keep them from doing their doggy greeting rituals; if your dog won’t stay still and quiet under the table, there’s no excuse, you have to leave.
I don’t get what the big hoopla is about; but I’m a dog person so maybe I can’t understand.
Just so long as they never allow cats.
[Relax cat people, that was a joke]

Hopefully restaurants will let know on their sites if they allow dogs so that I can stay away from there

Splendid mix of odd comments from our native Portuguese readership. Entirely missing the big picture - Portugal yet again pretending to be a 'Top Table' country with this empty gesture - when very few Portuguese have any comprehension of Animal Rights and their feelings. Apart from the thousands of dogs and cats that die annually through this ignorance of animal feelings what about all farm animals including the tormenting and mutilation of male cattle ?
Rather than these empty gestures; can we spare a thought now for the great majority of Portuguese too ignorant to care adequately for the animals in their custody?

I will not be going into any restaurant that allows dogs.
Incidentally, almost all the local restaurants I use have kitchens that are visible to the customer and I have never seen any unhygienic practices therein.

Considering the hygiene standards, or lack thereof, of some of the kitchens in local restaurants, the odd Tick or Flea won't make much of a difference.
