In a statement, the PSP district command of Faro reported having been alerted at 00:30 to the presence of the large wild boar in Olhâo, on Avenida 5 de Outubro, an area where several restaurants and bars are located.

“The police repeatedly tried to get the wild boar to return to its natural habitat, an area of bush that was about 600 metres away from the place where it was detected”, however the animal “continued in the direction of the public” and of the police.

As a last resort, police from the PSP police station in Olhão made the decision to shoot the animal, “in order to stop the imminent threat to the physical integrity of those present”. If the animal had got too close to people, the situation “could give rise to social alarm and a potential serious threat to the physical integrity of passersby”, stressed that police.
