Strong growth in British retail sales

msConsumers in Britain are shaking off their fear of spending and popping into the shops, stores and supermarkets.

Retail sales at the end of June were up by 1.6% from the first quarter of 2014, and 3.6% higher than last June. The quarterly leap was the greatest in any time over the last 10 years.

The price of goods for sale is now back at the same level as they were in June last year.

Sales began increasing at the end of the recession in 2009, but have shown stronger growth since the beginning of 2013.

Analysts believe the increased sales of food and goods reflects lower unemployment and greater job security as well as an increase in the total population.
