Monarch flight makes emergency landing at Faro Airport

monarchA Monarch airlines A320 made an emergency landing at Faro airport yesterday afternoon after the flight crew found problems with the aircraft’s hydraulic systems.

The Monarch flight from Birmingham to Funchal in Madeira landed in Faro without problems at 17.30 with emergency services standing by on yellow alert.

The captain asked permission to land at Faro airport and then flew around fora while to use up fuel to reduce the risk of fire should the landing turn into a crash.

The on-board passengers were put up in a Faro hotel and the passengers waiting at Funchal spent another night on the island courtesy of Monarch.

Spares were ordered for the aircraft with a fitting scheduled for Tuesday morning after which it is expected the flight will resume its journey, somewhat later than planned.

Quoting D.Smith:
The A320 cannot dump fuel.

Excellent, well spotted. The aircraft did fly around to use up fuel, rather than dump it. Many thanks for the correction.

As we saw with TAP aircraft in the last few weeks with aircraft parts raining down on Lisbon households - is the routine nowadays to fix a plane after something has obviously gone wrong ? :-?

To save on unnecessary expenses and pay more to shareholders.

I'm no aircraft mechanic but.... might this one day be too late ?

Is there any argument nowadays in favour of the old way of doing things - routine servicing of aircraft?
