Portugal´s jobless rate continues to slide

joblessUnemployment across the eurozone fell ever so slightly in June, dropping to 11.5% in June down from 11.6% in May.

Despite the welcome drop, nearly 18.5 million people in the euro area are struggling without jobs.

The good news for Portugal is that its rate fell to 14.1% in June. The rate has been steadily dropping over the last months.

In June last year, Portugal’s rate stood at 16.6%, so the decline to 14.1% was the largest decrease in all of the eurozone.

Still, the problem is the fourth highest in the euro area. The highest rates remain in Greece (27.3%) and Spain (24.5%).

Last June, 866,000 Portuguese were jobless. That has gone down to 723,000 in June of this year.

Portuguese youth got a bit of a break, with the rate falling to 33.5%, down from 38% a year earlier, leaving 128,000 without a job.

Austria's unemployment rate is the lowest in the region at 5%, followed by Germany at 5.1%.
