"In the summer of 2014, the average temperature was the second lowest since 1989” with only one official heat-wave recorded which was in June.

The three offical months of sumer, June, July and August, had a below average air temperature of 20.9 degrees centigrade.

The IPMA said the amount of rainfall was near normal and that with the autumn equinox on Tuesday 23 September at 03.29am, autumn is nearly upon us.

According to the IPMA, the number of days with maximum temperature between 30 and 35 degrees centigrade was "significantly lower than normal, with the highest number of hot days in the Alentejo, particularly in the inland Alentejo area."

The heat-wave days were between 11 and 17 June with daytime highs greater than or equal to 40 degree centigrade.

The report does make special mention of the rainfall in July which was the wettest since 1931 and the eighth wettest this century.
