New €10 note released on Tuesday

newtennerThe new €10 banknote will be in circulation as from Tuesday 23rd September.

The new version is more colourful and is claimed to be ‘safer’ although there may be a delay before all vending machines can be adapted to accept the note.

The note is designed to be easy to check for validity by the 'feel-look-tilt' action, which may need a bit of practice.

The new €10 has some raised print making it harder to forge and easier for those who can not see well or are blind to identify the notes through the feel of the various raised sections.

The banknote paper is stronger and has a new type of protective layer to increase its life in circulation.

On the ‘€10’, when tilted, you can see the colour change between green and dark blue. The note has a silver band with holograms and a portrait of Europe.

Pedro Marques, deputy director of the note issuing department at the Treasury hopes that most machines have been prepared so as to accept the new notes as of tomorrow as there has been plenty of notice.

João Amaral Tomaz at the Bank of Portugal commented that "We can not ensure that all equipment is able to accept the new €10 note as from tomorrow, since many machines are owned by traders or companies which can not be forced to adapt their machined in time."

Tha Bank of Portugal will accept old Portuguese bank notes indefinitely, even if no loger legal tender.
