August boom surprises even the Tourist Board

albufeirabeachThe tourism figures for this August rose 16.3% in the Algarve as a remarkable 608,000 visitors chose the region for their summer holidays.

The number of overnight stays increased by 12.1%, reaching 3 million with the all important revenue rising by 14.8% compared to last August, with over €160 million collected by the hotel sector, according to official figure just in from the National Institute of Statistics.

The delighted president of the Algarve Tourism Board commented, "the hotel results are very positive and are above even our most optimistic forecasts for the Algarve.”

Desiderio Silva, in tautologous form, commented  that "in an unprecedented feat, the region has surpassed three million overnight stays in a single month, for the very first time."

The summer ‘high season’ in the Algarve was boosted by a significant rise in Portuguese tourists taking breaks in the Algarve, with the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic setting a fine example.

These 'home grown' Portuguese tourists were up 22.2% to 1.2 million overnight stays showing that “the domestic market is in clear recovery for the Algarve,” according to Silva who said the figures are “very motivating for the Tourist Board which has made a huge effort to increase the internal market” which he considers as those coming from Spain as well as Portugal.

There is a word of warning from this tourism behemoth as he complained about budget cuts, "the growth of the sector could be at risk next year, given the amount that the State Budget contemplates cutting, around 14%, compared to 2013, despite the results obtained this year and the expectations that have been created.”
