Car sales boom despite recession

bmwDespite the prolonged recession, people in Europe remain devoted to purchasing new cars.

Sales in Europe jumped 6.4% in September, driven by purchases in Spain, France, Germany and the UK.

Altogether 1.24 million new cars were registered last month, accounting for the 13th month in a row of increased sales.

Out of all EU countries, only Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands saw sales drop to lower than they had been last year.

Spain led the way with sales up 26% to 57,000. This was a major boost to the country's car market, powered by the "cash-for-clunkers" programme.

In the UK,nearly 426,000 new cars were purchases, a jump of 9%.

German drivers bought 260,000 new vehicles, an increase of 3%. Sales in Italy were up 3.6% and in France by 2%.

The total number of new vehicles sold in the first nine months of 2014 was 9.57 million.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association said "substantial growth prevailed in all major markets" in the EU in September.
