Faro council and the Associação Animais de Rua (Association of Street Animals) have established an agreement that kicks off a campaign for the registration, vaccination and sterilisation of the stray and wandering animal population, focusing on those around Faro beach.
This is the second phase of the sterilisation project that studies and treats stray animals in the Faro area and which is due to run until November 1.
In just two days 50 cats have been sterilised and during the two weeks of the project, the Association is mobilising 15 animal specialists and vets to capture, sterilise and treat the strays that were identified during an operation conducted by the same team during 2013.
The campaign will focus on the animals’ owners, if they can be identified, as the wandering animals could be potential transmitters of parasites. The animals will be treated free of charge and advice given to owners as the correct treatment of animals in the future.
This type of action is a first for Faro council and the protocol with the Association is part of a broader project that has the support of the non-governmental international organisation, the Dog's Trust and Lusophone University.
The goal is to extend the coverage to all areas of the Faro municipality in order to control the population centres, "thus seeking positively to affect the balance between the dynamics of nature and the everyday life of the county."
The results of these operations will be presented at the end of the project by the Mayor of Faro Rogério Bacalhau, the head of the Associação Animais de Rua Maria Pinto Teixeira, and representatives of the other agencies involved.

Suggest sterilising their pet, for the good of the neighbouring animal community - to reduce fights amongst males or offspring fatal to the a mismatched female (ie a small terrier trying to give birth to a mastiffs pups) ... and they look at you as though you are suggesting they be sterilised.
Then these idiots release a female when it is 'on' so that any male in the neighbourhood can do its busineess in her ... causing more damage that no one pays for repairing.
If only we Brits were really as hair trigger violent as Magueijo tells us we are - I would happily take a spoon (not a knife - too quick) to the gonads of some of the animal mistreaters in my neighbourhood.
