French retailers expand in the Algarve

leroymerlinAs part of its expansion policy, Leroy Merlin has opened a new sales area for construction materials at its outlet opposite Algarve shopping, Guia.

The additional 3,000m2 zone ensures that "customers will be able to find a wider range of products and more available stock."

The new area has been designed with the professional builder in mind, a segment where Leroy has not performed well in recent years as builders have stuck to traditional trade suppliers, also there has not been much building going on in the past few years.

The builders’ area opens for business earlier than the main store and from 08.00am Monday to Saturday offers a drive-in zone to help swift loading of materials onto trade vehicles.

This format has been working well in Amadora, Lisbon and in the medium-term will be introduced to other Leroy stores in the country.

Over in Faro, the new FNAC store in the Forum Algarve is opening on Friday.

This is the second shop in the Algarve for the French retailer and it joins Marques da Silva a reseller of Apple Inc. products, and a new Nespresso shop, both opened recently, plus the new NOS cimema.

The 1,435 m2 FNAC store is on the ground floor of the Faro shopping center and is one of three new openings for the retailer.

A FNAC spokesman, who should stick to selling computers, said to Sul Informaçao today that "It is not the biggest, but it's not the smallest. It's bigger than the one opened most recently in Setúbal."

So, it is medium sized, then.

A total of 55 jobs will be created at the store which has cost €3 million, presumably including stock.

The FNAC director of communications and marketing, Pedro Mata, said that the company "intends to create partnerships with institutions in the region to promote musicians, writers and Portuguese artists."

Being latino's the French accept the idea (as they are no doubt 'guilty' of doing it themselves back home) ... of partnering with a major local. Or forget it.

Whether the Portuguese is their landowner from whom they lease or the franchise owner. Always look for the Portuguese in the background who 'made it happen' - for a fee.

This is the only way to enter a southern European latino country.

That or, if British, be illegal as no Portuguese will partner you legally. just take your bungs to look the other way.

But it is wrong to be the only way as the European Union is supposed to be about open borders ....

but that's the latino's for you ! And why the EU so far has failed the northern members.
