Almost 45 kilos of cocaine seized at Lisbon Airport

cocaineCustoms officers at Lisbon airport searched two suspicious bags that had arrived on a flight from Brazil and found cocaine hidden in among some bags of coffee.

A cunning hiding place this was not. The drug could not be considered a recreational amount for personal use as there was 45 kilos of the white powder, enough to retire on if successfully smuggled into the country and sold on.

A Brazilian citizen, 28, travelling on the flight from Belo Horizonte currently is 'helping police with their inquiries' as police and customs officers celebrate the massive haul.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Finance, the amount of cocaine is ‘one of the largest seizures of drugs ever made at a Portuguese airport by the Tax and Customs Authority.’

The cocaine was packed in two bags in the form of bricks hidden between bags of coffee powder.

This amount of cocaine if distributed would have been enough for 22.4 million individual wraps.

The penalty that lies ahead for the courier clearly was not enough to put him off his dangerous mission.
