Record attendance at Silves Medieval Fair

silvestowerWith a recorded 132,000 visitors in ten days, the twelfth Silves Medieval Fair was claimed as a success by the council which said the event continues to grow and establish itself as one of the Algarve's most important summer events.

During the 10 days of ‘history recreated’ the organisers in the ‘Magic Capital of Culture’ counted in 236 exhibitors and participants such as artisans, merchants, mystics, and food sellers, with 22 groups performing on horseback and providing other forms of street entertainment.

The organisers also imposed tighter rules for waste separation and recycling.

The date for next year’s fair was announced by Silves Câmara’s mayor, Rosa Palma with the 13th event to take place between 5 and 14 August next year.

In the eastern Algarve next week is the medieval fair in Castro Marim which also promised some living history

Between 26 and 30 August, Castro Marim castle is the focal point for tournaments, street theatre, a fun exhibition of torture instruments and plenty to eat and drink.

In Lagoa, Fatacil opens its doors this Friday until August 30th with about 700 exhibitors and plenty of food and drink stands.

About 170,000 people are expected at the 36th ‘Crafts, Tourism, Agriculture, Trade and Industry Fair of Lagoa’ (FATACIL).

The theme is "the year of the wine and vine" with the organisers stating that there is a marked interest in the wine sector and the show "is a demonstration of the strong bond with the economic roots of Lagoa as a producer of quality wine grapes."

There is music with David Carreira and Richie Campbell and Daniela Mercury in what is claimed as ‘the largest fair south of the Tagus.’

The event, run by the municipal company Fatasul, is aiming to exceed last year’s total gate of 150,000 visitors and is offering a 10 day ticket for €20 and a one day pass for just €3.50. FATACIL is open from 18.00 until 01.00 each evening.
