Faro Council and Animais de Rua, an association dedicated to controlling stray animals by neutering and spaying, are in a new partnership with a project to sterilise, treat and study stray animals in the municipality of Faro.
An initial survey took place between 21 and 24 November to trace the entire animal population located on Faro Island which is a problem area and is the target for the first campaign.
The association mobilised eight technical experts who photographed and recorded 161 dogs and cats so that the campaign of sterilisation and vaccination of the animals can be swift and well organised. The work should progress in the last two weeks of February 2014 .
Animais de Rua is part of a broader project that has the support of non-governmental international organisation the Dog's Trust, "the goal is to expand these areas of expertise to all areas of the county in order to control the animal populations thus seeking positively to affect the natural balance," according to Faro council.
CED (capture, sterilise and return) programmes “already have proved their effectiveness across Europe," according to Faro council whose joint initiative to sterilise the problem animals to stop unfettered breeding is clearly a sensible one and cheaper in the long term than catching strays and having them put down.
