Foreign shoppers seek out British goods online

4871Britain has become the third most popular country for international shoppers buying online.

In the last 12 months, 86.4 million consumers bought goods through British websites, making the UK the third largest online exporter in the world after the US and China.

While online shopping for goods on Chinese websites was so strong as to make it the largest exporter, the Chinese themselves also became the largest national group demanding British goods from British sites. Nearly 22 million Chinese shoppers bought items on British websites.

Americans were the next largest cross-border consumers, with more than 9 million buying goods from the UK.

Six million French and six million Germans turned to Britain for products. They were followed by new markets, namely 5.8 million Nigerians and nearly 5 million people in India.

About 60% of the Chinese consumers bought British clothing and shoes as well as cosmetics and beauty products.

Surprisingly, 42% of those shoppers also purchased British groceries and alcohol.

Seasonal promotions were popular with shoppers from other countries, such as Christmas sales and Black Friday specials.

The research, provided by PayPal/Ipsos, lead PayPal’s UK MD, Cameron McLean, to advise British businesses to offer language and currency options appropriate to the consumer.

“Customers expect to shop on websites in their own language and want to pay in their own currencies,” he said. If they can’t, they will turn to sites where they can.

PayPay noted that foreign buyers will be put off if the costs of delivery or making returns are too high.

I try to buy local, but Portuguese traders have poor web presence.
Emails go unanswered, prices are not competitive, even delivery times and costs don't beat English ones a lot of the time.

No mystery here, Portuguese traders take note. Price, Availability, Service.
