The Independent newspaper goes digital

6208aThe British newspaper, the Independent, has confirmed that it will no longer print paper newspapers but will rely exclusively on its digital format.

It said it was “the first national British newspaper to go digital-only.”

The last daily title will appear on 26 March and the last paper edition of the Independent on Sunday will be on 20 March.

The decision will have no effect on the publication of the Independent’s sister title, The Evening Standard.

“The newspaper industry is changing, and that change is being driven by readers," owner Evgeny Lebedev.

"They’re showing us that the future is digital," he added. "This decision preserves the Independent brand and allows us to continue to invest in the high quality editorial content that is attracting more and more readers to our online platforms."

The Lebedev family bought the paper - founded 30 years ago - for a nominal £1 in 2010, when its losses were reported to be £22.6m.

The move to digital only jeopardises up to 100 jobs. Mr Lebedev wrote to staff regretting that there would be a number of redundancies among its 150 staff.

The paper's publishing group, ESI Media, said that 25 new digital content roles will be created and editorial bureaux will open in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The Independent’s tabloid offshoot, the i newspaper, was sold earlier this week to Johnston Press, owners of The Yorkshire Post and The Scotsman.

The i, which sells for 40p, was believed to have an unaudited operating profit of £5.2m last year.
