António Bastos does a runner after faking illness

bastosThe businessman from Leiria, convicted in 2010 of shooting dead a thief in front of a policeman and fleeing overseas, has been caught in Guinea-Bissau.

António Bastos, 62, was tracked down by Portuguese police with the help of colleagues in Brazil and locally in Guinea-Bissau and was arrested. He had been on the run for five years and was taken to court to face a deportation hearing.

The businessman clearly does not want to start his 13 year prison sentence back in Portugal as when up before the court to rubber stamp his deportation from Guinea-Bissau, Bastos ‘became ill’ and was rushed to a local hospital when the police were told to keep a close eye on him.

By the end of the day it became clear that Bastos had done a runner, sparking a nationwide hunt for the convict and questions as to why those guarding him decided not to.

Bastos is known to have been living in Brazil, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau during his  five years on the run. Where he is now is anyone’s guess.
