Algarve's hospitals management, 'a classic example of how not to do things'

nurseThe Minister of Health is coming to Faro on Friday to celebrate today's appointment of a new board for the Algarve region’s public hospital service and to discuss with mayors how it all went so wrong.

Adalberto Campos Fernandes also will meet the Algarve University’s Chancellor to discuss a proposed new training programme which aims to supply the region with key medical staff.

Minister Adalberto Campos Fernandes will visit the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (AMAL), where he will meet region’s 16 mayors to "reflect and define real solutions for the health sector in the region,” taking into account the "displeasure and dissatisfaction” caused by the previous health management service under Dr Pedro Nunes.

"AMAL requires a swift and consistent response aimed at solving the many problems that have affected the region and the Algarve’s population," commented AMAL.

The meeting at the University between the Health Minister and the Chancellor will centre on the creation of a Community Health Academy of the Algarve, a joint venture planned and encouraged by the new government which is planned to ease shortages of medical staff.

The Health Minister previous has concurred that the Algarve’s hospital management system under Dr Nunes was a complete failure and classic example of how not to do things.

Minister Adalberto Campos Fernandes said he failed to understand how the region ended up in a state of war between management and medical professionals, councils and hospital staff.

Dr Joaquim Ramalho has replaced Dr Pedro Nunes who leaves behind a service scarred by conflict, overwork, shortages and mistrust.

"a state of war between management and medical professionals, councils and hospital staff"

This is the standard neoliberal approach to running public services into the ground prior to privatisation. The NHS is going the same way in the UK.
