Silves EN124 drivers mount urgent action to fix dangerous road

potholesilvesA group of local drivers, the self-styled "Users of the EN124" have decided that enough is enough and are to stage a slow drive-by this Saturday.

Their complaint is a common one across the Algarve region and beyond, that their local road is now in such a poor state of repair that it is dangerous, even life-threatening.

The countryside section of the EN124, between Silves and Porto de Lagos to the west, is noted for the adjacent riverside beauty and pleasant country views but now is in an appalling state by any standards and has forced much of the traffic to crawl along between the potholes on a generally degraded surface.

The slow drive-by, a protest technique used by the CUVI anti-tolls campaign group, is scheduled to start in the car park at the Silves municipal swimming pool.

"The EN124 is one of the main roads between the coast and the Algarve interior in the western area, taking much of the tourist flow in the Silves, Monchique, Portimão triangle. This is one of the most important economic resources for those populations," said the citizens group, expressing their disgust at the poor road condition which they blame on Infraestrutura de Portugal, the government company that is meant to be maintaining the country’s roads but is failing in many areas.

The group is calling on the local and regional authorities, including AMAL, to pressure the Government to get this road fixed before it becomes impassable.

strange that the eastern section of 124 from silves to messines is excellent and has been resurfaced twice in five years!
