Portugal airport workers strike called off a 11th hour

airplane2The strike action planned to start this morning July 1st was called off at the last moment as the baggage handling staff turned up for work as usual.

The Friday to Monday strike would have caused untold chaos at Portugal's main airports, especially in the Algarve where Faro is expecting record passenger throughput this weekend.

In late night talks on Thursday, the SITAVA union in discussion with the government called off its planned industrial action and has managed to reach some sort of compromise that involved keeping the airports functioning properly while details are sorted out in the calm of next week.
