Fishing boat runs aground at Tonel beach, Sagres

beachTonelThe Avô Rita, a fishing boat, has run aground on a Sagres beach for no apparent reason.

The six man crew was rescued from the grounded boat on Thursday night on Tonel beach.

"The crew showed signs of hypothermia but all are well, and the rescue was effected by land due to the sea conditions and the position of the vessel in the surf zone," said Commander Carvalho Pinto, Captain of the Port of Lagos.

The Avô Rita is registered in Peniche but operates out of Sagres and managed to run aground at around 23:15 on Thursday night.

The ship is stranded on the sand, "apparently without structural damage," and was waiting for the tide to rise before being refloated, "which will take place at around 15:00 on Friday."

"So far there have been no pollution leaks. The nets and other gear are being removed by a salvage company that now is responsible for removing the vessel," said the Commander.

The operation involved more rescuers than crew as the Maritime Police, a team of Sagres lifeboatmen, some random sailors and a compliment of firefighters from the Vila do Bispo station all lent a willing hand.
