Volunteer fireman arrested for starting 16 forest fires

bombeirosBringing shame to the uniform, a former volunteer firefighter of fourteen years standing has been arrested and charged with starting 16 fires in Proença-a-Nova in the Castelo Branco region.

The 46-year-old was arrested by the Judicial Police who said the man is implicated in the deliberate setting of multiple forest fires between July and September this year.

The police admitted that the warehouse worker also had been a volunteer firefighter until last year and had admitted to driving around hurling home-made firebombs out of his car window into forested areas.

The damage caused has been significant with fires burning pine, eucalyptus, cork oaks and olive trees standing over at least 100 hectares.

The detainee will be presented to court for initial questioning and to see whether he is held on remand or bailed, pending his trial. His excuse that he was 'permanently anxious' may not be received too sympathetically.

The police say that this year its officers have identified and arrested 72 people for starting forest fires, including the barman from Loulé who managed to destroy 2,500 hectares in the Algarve’s Monchique hills.

I can only emphasise what I said last week:
One has to wonder how much he was being paid by the air fire services for this sterling work?
Doubtless he might confess to have been on a 'busman's holiday, or claiming it all came to him in a dream.
Whatever!
The real culprits will only walk away, richer but minus one pyromaniac.
As I also stated last week any homeless/jobless/futureless/lo veless/depressomaniac will say yes to almost anything for a guaranteed future three squares a day and a roof over his/her head - albeit in a correctional institute.
One really needs to get out more - take a trip to Lisboa - perhaps
walk the streets and count the number of families who are living on them

Hmm. These people need to be sectioned under the grounds of social terrorism. I don't see a case for releasing them back into Society. They are just to much of a danger to be let loose .

I hope all these arsonists get the punishment they so richly deserve.
Burning at the stake sounds about right

Absolutely right Rick!

Thank you!

I can't believe they are considering bail thereby allowing this guy to carry on starting fires.

An immediate trial followed by 10 year's hard labour. Nothing less - people could have lost their lives.

To us expats it seems a total no-brainer to be paying any Portuguese to put out fires. Often suspected as summer fire starters are the winter council paid forest clearance workers. The Sapadores. Seasonal winter work that sees many of them then paid to put out fires in summer - or starve. But only called up when too many fires are happening for the regular bombeiros s to deal with. A 3rd party that cannot be over looked are the freelance part time firemen working for big landowners. With other day work to do like this chap - perhaps he is actually one of these and the distinction has been lost in translation
