Arsonist arrested near Loulé - Alentejo resort goes up in flames

fireA 43-year-old man was arrested just after he set fire to a wooded area in Betunes near Loulé on Saturday morning.

A GNR patrol spotted the fire and immediately went to see what was going on.

The man had set two fires and despite trying to escape, was arrested and the fires were soon put out by a council employee and the Loulé Bombeiros.

The Judicial Police is investigating a fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon in the Zmar eco-resort, about 12 kilometres from Zambujeira do Mar in the Beja district, which triggered a general evacuation, including wedding guests.

Beja fire control said that 98 firemen from Beja and Setúbal were soon on hand to tackle the blaze.

The fire caused substantial damage and 700 people, including customers, employees and wedding guests had to be evacuated.

João Ribeiro Ferreira, director executive of Multiparques which owns the complex near Zambujeira do Mar, said that guests were rehoused in other hotels at the company’s expense.

Ferreira said that nobody was injured as a result of the fire but the tourist development has suffered considerable damage in its central restaurant and pool areas but that other facilities were not affected.

"All the accommodation areas are intact, there has been no loss of guests’ personal property and the office area was not affected,” said Ferreira, adding that part of the kitchen, the living room, the staff area, the wave pool area and the Spa were damaged

The mayor of Odemira said the fire also had a social impact as the resort employs over 100 local people.

"There are many jobs involved and I know that this year, the resort was beating all attendance records" said the mayor, adding that he hoped the business would be able to recover quickly.
