Lagoa's historic centre to get a user-friendy makeover

lagoamap2The old centre of Lagoa is to get an overhaul, the first since 1773, to create a focal point for trade and to enable pedestrians to stroll, rather than scurry.

The council’s proposal, now that the public consultation period has run its course, is for a spend of €420,000 to revolutionise the centre through which traffic currently weaves and squeezes.

The area to be redeveloped is near the city's old market and covers Largo Alves Roçadas,  Rua Manuel de Arriaga, the  Praça da República and Rua Coronel Figueiredo.

The work is due to start on 3 October and go on for 135 days, according to mayor Francisco Martins in an interview with Sul Informação.

The area to be done up covers 4,820 m2 with vehicle restrictions, street furniture and leisure areas where locals and visitors can chat and chill out.

The plan will take into account the access needs of the market, the Post Office, the pharmacy and the church and local traders have been involved in the plan so hopefully will be happy with the final version.

Mayor Martins said the old center of the city has barely changed since its reconstruction after the earthquake of 1755 and that the new plan will produce an area of which the townspeople can be proud.
