Government to hire three more Kamov firefighting helicopters

fireBombeirosSmallThe Minister of Internal Affairs, Eduardo Cabrita, has scrapped the helicopter contract with Everjets and is to contract three Kamovs directly as the current ones are inoperable.
 
Everjets has been in charge of three Russian Kamov helicopters that were meant to be used for firefighting. None of these are airworthy. The remaining three, purchased from the Russians, are unavailble for use and were not included in the Everjets contract.

Repairs to Faro harbour wall completed

faroDockRebuildThe work to repair the crumbling harbour wall in far has been completed, according to Docapesca, ending a saga of complaints, missed schedules, claims of ‘no funds’ and a general disinclination to take responsibility for the area’s upkeep.

Docapesca said the contract for the repair of the wall of the harbour cost €92,814 which concludes the second phase of the work.

Faro Hospital coronary unit close due to 'pigeon mite' infestation

hospitalThe unwelcome presence of pigeon lice, or 'mites,' in the coronary unit of Faro Hospital caused its temporary closure on Saturday, while a specialist team went in to deal with the infestation of the 1mm beasties.

The regional hospital management said that it "recognised the existence of mites" and had moved patients to another area of the hospital so they could continue to be cared for.

Albufeira - happy pets and responsible owners

dogLeapingThe Municipal Assembly of Albufeira council has approved the creation of a special commission to prepare a wide-ranging animal welfare programme for the Council to adopt and implement.
 
The initiative came from the People-Animals-Nature political party whose local representative, Vera Belchior,  has been pushing for changes to better the lot of animals in the council area.

Foreigners' safety concerns 'a priority' for government

davidhomaspic1David Thomas, the president of Safe Communities Portugal, has signed an important protocol with the Home Affairs Ministry that will increase the security of foreigners living in and visiting the Algarve.
 
The Secretary of State for Home Affairs signed the collaboration to pave the way for an increase in targeted advice to foreign tourists to Portugal through the distribution of information leaflets and via information posted online as part of the government’s overall plan to help protect foreigners from crime.

After €18 million Salgado bung - PT's Zeinal Bava splashed out on luxury apartments

zeinalbavaAn investment worthy of a millionaire footballer, captain of industry or investment fund,  two luxury apartments in the Chiado area of Lisbon were purchased in 2011 at record-breaking price in the depths of Portugal economic recession. 

The buyer was an employee of Portugal Telecom - it’s Chief Executive no less – who used part of €18 million made available to him from the Grupo Espírito Santo slush fund, administered by Ricardo Salgado and used to reward the cherished few for,  ‘services rendered.’

ANA's reaction to 2-hour queues at Lisbon airport - stop issuing the data

LisbonAirportThe French controlled operator of Portugal’s airports has come up with a solution to the two-hour queues to get through passport control at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado airport ANA.
 
ANA has decided it will stop releasing data on waiting times and is to prohibit the sharing of any information relating to the queues.

Minister on the take - €2 million in bungs traced in EDP scandal

salgado11What's another million between friends? The former Minister of the Economy, Manuel Pinho, received not €1 million, but €2 million from the Grupo Espírito Santo slush fund with payments starting in 2002.
 
While he was Minister of the Economy, Pinho received hundreds of thousands of euros courtesy of Ricardo Salgado, (pictured left) the now-disgraced banker who headed the Espírito Santo Group of companies.
