Still within living memory for a great many, the wound it inflicted on the country has yet to close.

Six months ago an official public petition gained the requisite number of signatures for the discussion over island property rights to be continued in parliament where MPs could ask questions of a government intent on destroying properties and the island way of life.

Sagres lifeboat rescues British yachtsmen off Cape St Vincent

The Lagos maritime authorities said the yacht had four Britons on board but was adrift and unable to make headway.

José Sócrates' lawyers claim their client is being persecuted

As the old suspicions ‘go bankrupt’ new ones are needed in order to prolong the investigation, thus successfully violating the deadlines set by law. This is the claim by Sócrates' defence after the Public Ministry initiated raids on Wednesday morning at PT group companies, former directors’ homes and at a law office.  

Rescued turtles hitch a lift with Portugal's Navy

turtleTwo rescued turtles have finished their recuperation at the Algarve’s Zoomarine and hitched a lift with the Navy to be released far from the coast.

The sea turtles have been recovering and putting on weight at Zoomarine’s special recovery unit run by the biologist Élio Vicente.

Migrant flow into Germany headed by Europeans

europemapMore than two million people migrated to Germany in 2015, according to government statistics agency Destatis.

The number is the highest on record in German history. It represents an increase of 46% over 2014.
