Why You Should Be Buying Property in the Algarve

DucardBeachSmallWith summer approaching fast, many of us will be jetting off on summer holidays and falling in love with the destinations we visit. However, there is something about The Algarve which is truly captivating and brings its visitors back again year after year, and with its large selection of golf courses, eateries and stunning beaches it is easy to see why.

Why buy a home in The Algarve?

Portugal is known for being one of the safest countries in the world, and The Algarve is no exception. Combine this with the incredible weather and climate it can be a particularly comfortable place to live. With around 300 days of sunshine each year, it really is the perfect place for those looking to relocate completely or as an investment opportunity in the shape of a holiday home.

If are looking to relocate, many foreign buyers can take advantage of the Non-Habitual Tax Residency regime, which offers potential tax-free or low-tax on incomes for retirees and selected professionals. Another bonus is how you can travel to and from the United Kingdom with ease, because of daily flights from many of the UK airports.

Something for everyone

Whether you prefer the sight of the towering sandstone cliffs which overlook the sandy beaches, the rolling countryside, traditional architecture or just the natural beauty of this region, it really has it all. Away from the touristy spots, the rural villages and towns of Guia, Pêra, Porches, Algoz and Boliqueime offer a welcoming atmosphere, and have regular fish and vegetable markets as well as essential amenities such as banks, post offices and pharmacies. The area is also becoming a foodie’s haven, with the multiple Michelin-starred restaurants of Vila Joya complementing delicious Portuguese food at several establishments throughout the area.

Of course, let’s not forget about the spectacular golf courses. The Algarve boast some of the best courses in Europe and have world championship courses and family oriented golf and leisure resorts providing wonderful facilities all year round. Golf courses in the area include Val de Lobo near Faro and Penina between Portimao and Lagos, but there are several other courses to choose from.

For yachting enthusiasts, the town of Vilamoura has a great yacht marina and adjacent is the seaside town of Quarteira with many restaurants, bars and quaint cafes.

What can you buy there?

When buying Algarve property for sale, it is actually a relatively straightforward process. With one bedroom apartments starting at around €150,000, and two bedrooms at around €190,000, a second home or ‘home and income’ can be well within reach. Villas in the towns and villages to the west of Albufeira start at around €400,000. However, there are many opportunities to buy property at either end of the price scale.

The first stage to purchasing a property in Portugal is reserving the property that you wish to buy. A reservation form is not used in all Portuguese property transactions, but it does give both parties a degree of security when the next stage.

Cost of living

While the cost of living remains high for Portuguese people, this is not the case for foreigners or people who are accustomed the other European economies; where in this case, Portugal is truly an economical heaven. The truth is that living costs are substantially lower when compared with France, UK, Spain, Italy, or Germany, especially the real estate sector.
