Madeleine McCann search may be extended

luzscrublandThe police scrubland search for Madeleine McCann may have to be widened to include two new zones, both in the Praia da Luz area.

The British police said today that it had permission until the Friday 6 June to use sniffer dogs and geo-radar equipment at the current search site and have no plans as yet to continue beyond this deadline.

The search may be widened while carrying on with the current search at the first site, which so far has revealed nothing of interest.

Extending the search area will need permission from the Portuguese authorities whose police have been overseeing the search.

British police officers have employed local council staff who have been using bush cutters to clear certain areas of scrubland.

Intensive finger-tip searches have been carried by officers out to no avail.

There are many more journalists and film crew members at the Praia da Luz site than there are police officers and all efforts are being taken to allow the police to do their work uninterrupted. Despite this, TV footage has been appearing on news channels all day.

Channel 4 News presenter Alex Thomson summed up the saga accurately when he said the Madeleine McCann story did not deserve its news ranking. "I've been sickened by the way the media have allowed themselves to be taken for a full-scale ride by the McCanns." He added that the parents' conduct, "a contributory factor in the abduction, was largely downplayed or ignored altogether by sycophantic, gullible blanket coverage."

More and more Portuguese are becoming aware that their Police obsession with secrecy in investigations has little to do with actually solving a crime. But far more to returning everything to 'normality'.

A good example is the Praia da Meco parents wanting answers as to why their children died under such odd circumstances that night last December. Fearing some sort of Ministerio Publico / P J 'stitch up' to protect the University from claims for negligence and the 'Duke' – supposedly the only living witness; they agitate for answers via Facebook.

Then we learn of a bizarre 'omerta' / silence of all the University students, some of whom may have also been there and witnessed the tragedy.

What have they to fear in coming forward to the Police – other than their University screwing up their grades and, for a lifetime ahead – being known as a 'snitch' ?

Quoting chez:
Will the McCann's be contributing to the cost of this exercise from the funds they have received from their numerous libel cases?

Not a chance. And while half our police force are on the beach, a child a day goes missing in London alone.

Some solace for the Portuguese in all of this. At least they know they aren't the only country with an incompetent police force.
