Exhibition by Edwin Hagendoorn & Justine Albronda - Jun 7th to Jul 1st

Justine Albronda, Boy, 22 x 30 cm. watercolour.

Painters, Dutch couple Justine and Edwin, living in Olhão for 10 years, will be exhibiting their individual paintings as well as their larger collaborative paintings. Their contrasting styles are complemented in their still life paintings, as homage and respect both to painter and partner.
The majority of work shown will be Edwin’s - gestural and experimental, whilst Justine’s work is methodical and meticulous.

Edwin Hagendoorn / Justine Albronda, Tablescape, 80 x 60 cm. oil on canvas.Edwin Hagendoorn, an accomplished and skilled artist is a quiet humble man but within the medium of paint he finds his voice - it is not quiet, it is loud, daring, unconventional both in narrative, material and style.

This body of work made over a period of 5 years challenges and pushes boundaries, sometimes raw, harsh and uncomfortable.
There is a brutality that is upfront; the characters in these gestural paintings seem to jeer at the audience, daring the viewer to look deeper and darker. Says Hagendoorm, “ For me painting is freedom and drawing is breathing”. Hagendoorn is an observer, a master of line; he watches, he draws, he records, capturing the expressive essence of a passerby, with sensitivity and humour, many of his subjects resident of his adoptive town Olhão.

Justine Albronda choses subjects where surrounding factors remain constant, such as still life, carefully capturing small details of
inert objects.

This is an exhibition not be missed.
