Algarve History Association Events: Autumn 2021

ahassociationIt is with great pleasure that Algarve History Association announce our events and concerts for this Autumn, 2021.

TALKS

Our negotiations with the Librarians at Tavira and Lagoa are on hold until after the elections of 26 September.  At present we cannot be sure of the conditions under which we shall have to conduct ourselves on the relative dates.  At present, the maximum attendance allowable at Tavira is set at 30-35, and the maximum at Lagoa is 20.

Our plan for October is as follows:

Friday 5th November 11:00

Andrew Kennedy                  Space and The Kinship of Coincidence

Tuesday 26th October  18:00

Peter                                    D Sebastião and the Iberian Union

Andrew Kennedy writes:

I will discuss themes taken from my recent book The Cosmology and People and the time travel solution: An Astrobiological Proposal (2020) on the future of humans when faced with the difficulties of interstellar travel. In particular, I will discuss coincidence as it appears in theories about the origins of our universe and how it connects the future to our present. I will discuss how coincidence is a property of this world and how it contributes to consciousness and why an understanding of coincidence will be required to voyage among the stars.

Peter writes:

D Sebastião has some claim to have fought Portugal´s most ruinous battle, and to have brought about conditions for the union of the two Iberian kingdoms, under Spanish or Castilian leadership.  What sort of person was this young man? Why did he embark on the doomed crusade in which the crowned heads of Catholic Europe steadfastly refused to join?  What was the effect on Portugal and on the Portuguese Empire of his ill-starred adventure?  Were there any positive outcomes from the reign of D Sebastião, and are there any reasons why he should be remembered with nostalgia?

CONCERTS

It is with great pleasure that we announce the first event in our concert series for 2021 / 2022, and we are also making provisional arrangements for the rest of the season.  There are six dates in the programme, of which the first, third and fourth are already fixed.  Our first date in October is Sunday 24th at 16:00 in the afternoon, and we are open for reservations.  Please email Peter on peterbooker1347@gmail.com.

The String Trio is  a newly created ensemble, and comprises our old friend Varoujan Bartikian on cello, and two performers new to us, Vadim Tsibulevsky on violin and Samuel Barsegian on viola. These three performers are sometime members of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon.  Varoujan is Principal Cello with the Gulbenkian, and although Vadim lives in Belgium, he is often invited to lead the Orchestra in Lisbon.  As they are regular performers in the leading orchestra in Portugal, we can expect a performance of the highest standard.

Their programme for our first concert in twenty one months is as follows:

1. Schubert - String Trio in B-flat major, D.471 (ca. 10’)

2. Mozart - Duo for violin and Viola in G major, K.423 (ca. 16’)

3. Glière - Duos for Violin and Cello op. 39 (ca. 16’)

Interval

4. Schubert - String Trio in B-flat major, D.581 (ca. 22’)

The other dates for note in the concert-goer´s diary are:

? December 2021       Varoujan Bartikian and Lucjan Luc

6 February 2022        Nikola Meeuwsen

10 April 2022              20/30/40 Fingers at the piano

? May / June               Lucjan Luc

? July 2022                 Students from Faro Conservatory

We hope to keep the format of our concerts similar to our previous format - in other words to have two halves, with an interval for drinks and petiscos.  Perhaps we shall institute a one way system around the bar and the serving area, with plenty of hand alcohol solution to go round.  We may have to require our guests to continue with their masks whilst in the auditorium, but we cannot take a view on that requirement until the government and the councils have made their pronouncements, which they will probably do after the elections on 26 September. Government pronouncements may also have an effect on the numbers which we may permit at this event.

However these rules and regulations turn out, we feel that it is important that each of us acts in a way to preserve and maintain our own well-being and that of our fellow audience members.  It is to be expected that anyone who feels off-colour on the day of the concert would take steps to act responsibly.
