END POLIO NOW 3RD ANNUAL CHARITY BIKE RIDE

Sunday, 19th November, 9.30 am from Estoi Palace Pousada
RC Estoi Palace International in association with Algarve Bike Holidays is organizing its 3rd annual charity bike ride to benefit the End Polio Now Campaign. The ride will take around 2 hours and includes the challenging Sao Miguel mountain peak.
Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine. Cases have been reduced by 99.9% since 1988 through the vaccination programme.
Unless polio is eradicated, within 10 years there could be as many as 200,000 new cases each year, all over the world. The disease is endemic in only 3 countries, but unless every child is vaccinated, no child is safe anywhere.

In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending polio and matches every dollar donated 2 to 1. If you would like to take part please contact paul@algarvebikeholidays.com, 913 226 954, or if you cannot take part please make a donation as for every euro you contribute End Polio now will receive 3 thanks to the Gates Foundation. Donations can be made via our website www.rotaryestoipalace.org or for further information on ways to donate and take part contact Shirley on shirley.d@rotaryestoipalace.org.
