Road accident deaths up 13% in Portugal

accident125Accidents on Portugal’s road network have resulted in 460 deaths so far in 2017, according to the National Highway Safety Authority.

The death toll is 53 higher than in the same period of 2016, with the number of accidents registered at the Authority by the police and the GNR, up 1,902 from last year’s 116,340.

The period is between January and November with Oporto registering the most deaths (64), followed by Setúbal (52), Lisbon (46) and Santarém (42).

According to the ANSR, road accidents also caused 40,168 injuries this year, in 2016 the number was 38,204.

The data records deaths that happened at the scene of the accident or on the way to hospital.
