João Lúcio Pousão Pereira, know by all as João Lúcio, was outstanding as a poet and a lawyer who died as a result of the Spanish ‘Flu pandemic in 1918.
It is estimated that about 500 million people, one-third of the world's population, became infected with this virus, and the number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide.
João Lúcio died in his native Olhão on October 27th, 1918 at the age of just 38, leaving a body of work that makes him one of Portugal’s foremost poets.
Olhão will be celebrating arguably its most famous son, from Friday, October 12, at 5:00 p.m., with the opening of the exhibition, "Family ties: between the Alentejo and the Algarve" in the António Rosa Mendes Municipal Archive, recalling the poet's Alentejo and Algarvian family roots.
The exhibition is split between the Archive building and the space opposite the Paços do Concelho.
On Saturday, October 13, at 5:00 p.m., there will be a ‘Recital in memory of João Lúcio,’ at the Chalet João Lúcio, by musicians Eduardo Ramos and Jorge Soares.
From 15 October to 30 November, at the municipal library, there will be an exhibition, "The work of João Lúcio" in which some of the poet's most famous works will be displayed.
At the Municipal museum, a João Lúcio exhibition will be launched on October 18, at 5:30 p.m. with portraits, iconography and sculpture merging with his poetry.
On Sunday, October 21, at 3:45 p.m. there will be a poetry reading at the Cultural Re-Creative Republic Association 14 and the launch of a study of the poet, "O Criador de Fantasmas," (The Creator of Ghosts).
To close the programme that marks the centenary of the death of João Lúcio, on Saturday, October 27 at 7:45 pm, a symposium in honour of the author will take place at the Cultural Re-Creative Republic Association.
João Lúcio Pousão Pereira is considered the greatest exponent of the poetry of Olhão. Having studied law, in 1905, he published "O meu Algarve," a work that immortalised him as one of the greatest figures of the Algarve poetry.
João Lucio designed and commissioned the famous chalet in Pinheiros de Marim, a rare surviving example of Symbolist architecture in Portugal.
