Technology Park proposed at University's Gambelas site

fibreopticA plan resurrected by Faro Council, to turn 104 hectares to the south-east of the University’s Gambelas campus into a technology park, will be discussed with the public on March 1st at the Salão Nobre dos Paços in the city.

"The project covers an area of approximately 104 hectares, near the university campus of Gambelas in the parish of Montenegro, of which 6.6 hectares are for the International Technological Park of the Algarve," explained the Council.

The creation of the Technological Park first was proposed several years ago, but those involved, including the University, decided that it was preferable to create an Algarve Tech Hub at the Campus da Penha at the north-east of the city.

The Technological Park, a far bigger project with an environmental impact, requires significant private investment so has not progressed.

The Council says that the new Technological Park, “will provide a network among universities, established companies, entrepreneurs, investors and investment partners, will promote cooperation with national and international entities involved in knowledge and technology transfer, will offer quality facilities such as an incubator, offices and research laboratories and make profitable proximity to the University of Algarve and consolidate the transfer of technology and knowledge.”
