The Left Bloc demands the resignation of the head of the Portuguese Environment Agency

TejoFoamThe Left Bloc stance today was that the Portuguese Environment Agency has failed regarding pollution in the Tagus river, that it failed to properly control the pulp producer, Celtejo and that the president of the agency must resign.
 
Left Bloc MPs accused the president of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) of having failed, when in 2016 it altered the license awarded to Celtejo to allow the company’s plant to increase the amount organic pollutants pumped into the river.

Algarve councils to install CCTV surveillance systems in trouble spots

cctvOlhão, Portimão and Faro are to have CCTV cameras installed to monitor and record activity in their main trouble spots, with a live feed to local police stations.
 
Olhão’s mayor, António Pina, commented, "We will tender for the acquisition of the system next month," with local ratepayers picking up the €65,000 cost for 24 cameras spying on Avenida 5 de Outubro, Avenida da República and in the main pedestrian and shopping street, Rua do Comércio.

Architects demand halt to Portimão childrens' home redevelopment

architectsymbolThe Order of Architects has condemned plans by Portimão council to expand a local childrens’ home, claiming the work will "destroy and adulterate" the original building - a classic from the noted architect António Vicente de Castro.
 
The Southern Regional Section of the architects' body, states that it was represented at a meeting of Portimão council on February 6th and appealed that the work should not be authorised, saying also that other ​​heritage and preservation entities also have condemned the council's plans.

Monte Gordo beachside redevelopment - on time and on budget

According to Conceição Cabrita, the Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, "6 of the 18 new concessions already are under construction, so the progress is frankly positive and soon we will have a totally refurbished beach area.”

Portugal's mortgage rates at historic lows

According to the central bank, new consumer loans amounted to €401 million and personal loans for ‘other purposes’ accounted for €183 million.
