Norwegian Air says it has plans to increase its flights from Gatwick Airport no matter what the British government decides on airport expansion.
The UK government has been mulling over the idea of enlarging London air capacity and may one day decide between either Heathrow or Gatwick.
A Norwegian Air spokesperson said it would press ahead with plans for more flights out of Gatwick irrespective of which airport gets British government backing for expansion.
The low-cost carrier is already Gatwick’s third largest airline. It has been the only airline to speak out in favour of expanding Gatwick, but has now qualified that when its spokesperson said it had always believed Gatwick was the right choice for Britain’s next runway but the airliner will continue its growth plans no matter what the final decision is.
“Norwegian’s expansion at our Gatwick base and other UK airports will continue in 2017 with even more new routes, increased flights and brand new aircraft. If Gatwick is also allowed to expand in future, that will allow us to be even more ambitious in our plans,” he added.
Norwegian Air has experienced strong growth in the number of passengers flying to and from the UK, in part because of its increase in the number of trips from Gatwick to the US.
