Aldi shock at cocaine delivery

aldiCartons of cocaine have been delivered to an Aldi supermarket in Germany.

Boxes of bananas also containing 140kg of the drug were sent to five different Aldi shops in the Berlin area in what police say was a “logistical error” made by smugglers.

The haul, valued at €6 million, is thought to have entered the country in Hamburg after travelling by sea from Colombia.

Workers at the five branches of Aldi discovered the drugs while unpacking the boxes.

It was Berlin's biggest cocaine haul in years, according to the head of Berlin’s anti-drugs squad.

It is not the first time that a supermarket has received an unexpected shipment of drugs. In 2010, several outlets of Lidl in Spain received banana shipments which also contained secreted bricks of cocaine. The fruit had been imported from Ecuador and the Ivory Coast.

Spanish police at the time reported discovering cocaine which had been smuggled in various items, including stuffed animals, nappies, seaford and even a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
