Portuguese dump social media in record numbers

twitterOne in five Portuguese who use social networks stopped using at least one last year.

A “lack of interest” was the main reason, according to a study by Marktest which reported that 21% of users abandoned a social network in 2016.

In ‘The Portuguese and Social Networks,’ the abandoned networks named were hi5, where 30% dropped out, Twitter where 21% left and Google+ where 16% said they had logged off due to their lack of interest.

This “lack of interest” reason wa given by 36% of those dumping social media websites, followed by “lack of time” and “friends have migrated to another network.”

Marktest's findings revealed that young users, and low-income users, have been more prone to leaving one social network, often in search of a new ones.

Facebook is being dropped by teenage users whose preference for Instagram and Snapchat leaves established, hence boring ‘establishment’ names facing lower user numbers despite recent valuations and company sales in the tens of billions of euros.
